Borderline Personality Disorder: A Perpetrator/Victim Perspective

SEX23 03
Sexuality & Intimacy Conference - 2003

Noel Larson, MSW, PhD, LICSW

Clients diagnosed with Axis II disorders often present the therapist with a substantial clinical challenge. Those diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder are among the most feared, and sometimes dreaded. Frequent litigators against therapists, these clients have, as their mission, the penetration of the therapist's ego boundaries. This session will present a systemic approach that minimizes the power/control struggles that often lead to premature termination. Strategies for managing difficult symptoms, including suicidality, self-injury and therapist boundary intrusions will be discussed, and countertransference will be explored.
