“Reasons why” are intriguing as a way to make sense of difficulties in life. There is a conventional wisdom that is deterministic in its nature. An example is that people who are traumatized by child abuse then turn around and abuse others. The fact, of course, is that most people who are abused do not abuse others, even though they may suffer traumas. The plenary lecture will look at widely held, although erroneous, notions which purport to explain but only mislead or confuse.
