Recovery and Resiliency - Putting on a Positive Face
By Jenna Bensoussan

The Broward Mental Health and Substance Abuse Coalition hosted the Recovery and Resiliency conference at Nova Southeastern University in early May.

A multitude of excellent speakers were in attendance, including William Cope Moyers, David McVinney, Michele Adler, and the renowned Bill White, to name a few.

Small group sessions occurred at various times throughout the conference with topics ranging from Behavioral Health Recovery and Resiliency Among Children and Adolescents, to Faith Community Issues, Cultural Roundtables and Criminal Justice and Forensic Issues.

The main focal point of this conference, however, encompassed the idea of the Recovery Revolution in both the mental health and addiction treatment fields. Migration from the Acute Care Model of Addiction Treatment (AC) to a more viable Recovery Management Model (RM) is already underway.

There is growing interest in the RM Model at the Federal Level, system transformation processes of state and local communities and State Medicaid rules being re-written to reimburse peer-based recovery support services.

Research continues to explore various methods for assertive approaches in continuing care and recovery checkups, including telephone and internet-based assistance.

Even though the RM Model is evolving and growing in popularity, it will take years before behavioral health treatment fully migrates over to this new approach due to Institutional resistance, funding and lack of guidelines and support services.

Hopefully, with continued RM-related recovery research, state pilot expansions and evaluation of RM pilots and NIH-sponsored trials of RM service elements, the implementation will take on a more speedy role in America's ability to heal.
