Pre-conference workshop-6 hours

James Garrett, L.C.S.W.-R.

Contrary to what most clinicians believe, it is possible to work with families to get resistant substance abusers successfully engaged in treatment. This pre-conference workshop will focus on the Invitational Intervention method, A Relational Intervention Sequence for Engagement (ARISE) — An Evidence Based Method to Help Families Get a Resistant Substance Abuser Started In Treatment. Participants are encouraged to read the 6 journal articles related to ARISE that are posted at www.linkinghumansystems.com.

Pre-Conference Workshop Registration
8:30-9:00am
ARISE - The Theory 9:00-10:30am
Families can have strong motivation to get a resistant substance abuser to enter treatment. ARISE is designed to harness this motivation to effect positive change. This section covers the NIDA research on ARISE; SPECT brain scans that validate that families report about “a stranger living in their home”; family systems theory related to Family Motivation to Change.
ARISE - The Model
10:45-12:15pm
The next three sections are meant to give skill based training on the 3 Levels of ARISE. In this first section, the ARISE protocol using the First Call Worksheet will be taught and role-played by each participant, to learn to take an initial call from a concerned family member and use proven motivational techniques to coach this caller into mobilizing family and friends to form an Intervention Network.
1:30-3:00pm
This second section will teach how to invite the addicted individual to come to the First Meeting, how to prepare for the First Meeting of the Intervention Network and how to conduct the First Meeting.
3:30-5:00pm
The third section will focus on Level Two and Level Three of ARISE. There will be case examples used to demonstrate the techniques used in each of these two Levels.
