Getting Your Life Into Flow

The groundbreaking research of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defined eight components that make an experience enjoyable. Using his Experience Sampling Method (ESM) he analyzed the data from 8000 subjects randomly paged throughout their day to record their thoughts, actions, feelings and various states of consciousness (concentration, degree of motivation, etc). According to Csikszentmihalyi, in flow, “The ego falls away; time flies; your whole being is involved and you’re using your skills to the utmost.” Does that sound like your typical day at the office? In this positive psychology workshop, you’ll learn what 40 years of research can tell you about strategies therapists can use to maximize their own experience of flow throughout their lives. You’ll learn how to become more sensitive to your internal feedback, so you can notice when you’re out of flow; how to establish small goals, so you can refocus and be more present; and how to ramp up or reduce the challenge of any situation, so you can maintain maximum engagement. We will apply these skills to the treatment setting.

This session will explore the fundamental structure of worry—how it ignores data that isn’t negative, how it squeezes out room for corrective information, and how it gives rise to erroneous beliefs. Stemming from this knowledge, participants will learn a set of therapeutic strategies based on the latest research.
